چکیده

[1] The generation of secondary internal waves by the interaction of a large-amplitude internal solitary wave with the Dreadnought Bank in the Andaman Sea (6 400N, 95 470E) is shown by analyzing a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image acquired by the European Remote Sensing satellite ERS-2 and by carrying out model calculations. Although the Dreadnought Bank is quite deep (241 m), the model calculations show that largeamplitude internal solitary waves as encountered in this sea area can overturn and break over the bank and generate secondary internal waves. Comparison of model results with observations clearly demonstrates that the semicircular wave pattern visible on the ERS-2 SAR image centered at the Dreadnought Bank is indeed a sea surface manifestation of a secondary internal wave packet generated by scattering of a large-amplitude internal solitary wave and not by the interaction of the barotropic tidal flux with this underwater obstacle.

Generation of baroclinic tides over an isolated underwater bank

[1] The interaction of stratified tidal flow with an isolated bank (Jones Bank in the Celtic Sea) was investigated numerically and using observational data collected during the 25th research cruise of the R/V James Cook in July 2008. Two scenarios of observed wave generation, one with pure tidal forcing and another with an extra background current, were reproduced numerically and compared again...

Generation of second mode solitary waves by the interaction of a first mode soliton with a sill

Results of an experimental and theoretical study of the interaction of a first mode internal solitary wave with a localised bottom topography (sill) are presented. Laboratory experiments have been performed in a 10m long and 0.33m wide channel filled with a stratified fluid. The interface between the two layers (fresh and salt water) is diffuse and has a finite thickness. Soliton-type disturban...

A Study of Bit Condition for Generation Rx -Mode Waves: Interaction of Particles with Z/UH-Mode Waves

Interactions of charge particles with electromagnetic waves have important effects (linear and nonlinear) on the propagation of electromagnetic waves, and it can somewhat play a role in generation of the new mode waves. Besides, the particle energies can play an important role in causing instability in plasma. The values of parallel energy of the particles have been calculated so that they can ...
